This paper examines ethnographic writing in the Jesuit Relations, a set of periodical reports from missionaries in Northwestern New Spain. Addressed to their religious and monarchical authorities in Europe, these texts were written and published in the 17th and 18th century and widely read by contemporaries. Drawing on currents in cultural anthropological thought regarding the complex relationship between the missionaries, their subjects, and the texts they produced, we analyze how the Relations allowed the Jesuits to dene Amerindian music and dance culture for European readers.
